Artificial Pancreas for Diabetes

When I was reading about the artificial pancreas for diabetes today it reminded me of all those Sci-fi movies where a character has a bionic arm that makes them incredibly strong. I think the last one I saw like that was iRobot. Well this may not be as flashy but it is definitely just as compelling. A bionic pancreas can have life changing affects for anyone who gets one.  It also brings to mind the idea that this has greater ramifications. Pancreatic cancer has made the headlines quite a bit as of lately. Could this device replace a remove pancreas?

According to the National Diabetes Fact Sheet 8.3% of the U.S. population is affected by Diabetes. That’s over 20 million people all possibly needing one of these man made organs. Well one girl was able to be apart of new study that has given her a new independence from diabetes. Here’s how here story begins:

When you think of living better with Type 1 Diabetes you probably imagine living with a pump that takes the  place of you checking your blood glucose levels many times a day or having to inject insulin.  Well Riva Greenberg doesn’t agree. Her story describes her experience with moderating the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Capitol Chapter’s second annual Research Summit on Type 1 Diabetes.

My first question when I got the call to moderate was, “Why me?” (Not unlike the response I had to my diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes 40 years ago.) And I wasn’t just fishing for compliments.

Most of my work in diabetes is in building emotional resilience and behavior change. Science? Beta Cells? Islet infusions? I don’t even wear an insulin pump and I tried a continuous glucose monitor for only 10 days. I’m an old-fashioned girl.
